Renewed NWT historical timeline launched as resource for schools and residents

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is excited to launch a renewed NWT Historical Timeline as a resource for NWT schools and residents.

From origin stories to present day events, the renewed timeline aims to be an inclusive depiction of the history, cultures, and people that make up the Northwest Territories, told through the collections and archives of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC). 

Appointment of Municipal Administrator in Fort Resolution

Today, the order declaring that the Hamlet of Fort Resolution is under Administration takes effect. This order will remain in effect until it is repealed at a date to be determined.

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) has determined that it has become necessary to place the Hamlet of Fort Resolution under Administration due to the financial and operational challenges it has been facing.

GNWT announces enhancements to Student Financial Assistance

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has enhanced the Student Financial Assistance (SFA) program to better support students and remove barriers to post-secondary education.  SFA provides financial assistance to eligible Northwest Territories (NWT) residents to assist with post-secondary education-related expenses.

Program enhancements include:

GNWT introduces temporary electricity rate relief to prevent sharp increase to electricity bills

Recognizing the impact of inflation, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is introducing temporary relief to electricity rates. The relief will offset significant increases in the price and consumption of diesel over the past year and a half in the territory.

To keep consumer electricity bills at their current levels, the GNWT is making a one-time contribution of $15.2 million to the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC). 

Two significant uncontrollable events have occurred that have driven the cost to provide power much higher.

GNWT announces inductees to 2023 NWT Education Hall of Fame

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is pleased to announce the inductees of the 2023 Northwest Territories (NWT) Education Hall of Fame.

Each of the inductees have made a strong and lasting impression on their colleagues, students and communities. These four deserving individuals and one organization/team have provided exemplary service to education in the NWT.

The 2023 inductees and their categories are*:

GNWT outlines whole-of-government approach to address homelessness

Today in the Legislative Assembly, Premier Caroline Cochrane tabled A Way Home: A Comprehensive Strategy to Address Homelessness in the Northwest Territories.

The strategy builds on existing Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) efforts to address homelessness and identifies actions that the GNWT can take to address homelessness in all its forms. This included enhancing supports for those at risk of becoming homeless, and improved, person-centred services for those experiencing chronic homelessness.

Credit Rating Pilot Program for Public Housing Clients

As part of Housing NWT’s Renewal Strategy, the GNWT is launching a pilot program in Fort Resolution and Inuvik to enable public housing clients to receive a positive credit rating when they make on-time monthly rent payments.

The program will allow clients to opt in to have their payments reported to credit bureaus. Only positive credit ratings will be disclosed.

GNWT releases Innovation Action Plan to prepare NWT for knowledge economy

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released an Innovation Action Plan to serve as a stepping stone towards the development of an NWT-based knowledge economy.

The plan identifies goals and actions in five priority areas, critical to the eventual development of the NWT’s knowledge economy. The five priority areas are:

- Greater collaboration

- Development and attraction of skilled workers

- Research, development, and commercialization of knowledge

- Entrepreneur and business development

- Improved connectivity

GNWT announces support programs for evacuees and community governments hosting evacuees

In response to the recent evacuations in Hay River and the Kátł’odeeche First Nation Reserve, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has launched two new programs to support evacuees and community governments: the Evacuee Income Disruption Support program and the Community Government Hosting Evacuees Grant.
