Mr. Speaker, it has always been my belief that partnership between our communities, the Government of the Northwest Territories and other levels of government are the key to increasing affordable housing in the Northwest Territories.  Through the National Housing Co-investment Fund, we have an opportunity to make this a reality.

Aujourd’hui, la ministre responsable de la Société d’habitation des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (SHTNO) a annoncé la prolongation du Programme de supplément au loyer transitoire (PSLT) jusqu’au 30 novembre 2020.

La SHTNO et la Société canadienne d’hypothèque et de logements (SCHL) poursuivent leur collaboration pour mettre en œuvre l’Allocation canadienne pour le logement (ACL) et terminent actuellement les éléments de sa conception. L’ACL est un programme à coût partagé qui vise à offrir aux résidents le soutien dont ils ont besoin pour accéder à un logement abordable.

Mr. Speaker, increasing the number of affordable homes and reducing core housing need is a priority of this government. The difficult times that we are emerging from highlight that safe and secure housing is one of our highest needs.  The delivery of housing services became more challenging given our need to stay healthy in preparation of COVID-19 through physical distancing.

Mr. Speaker, we recognize that supporting vulnerable residents in need of housing or at risk of homelessness across the Northwest Territories is an essential part of the overall response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation has been working to ensure that we meet the needs of our residents during this difficult and challenging time.

Aujourd’hui, M^me Paulie Chinna, ministre responsable de la Société d’habitation des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (SHTNO) a annoncé que les logements précédemment réservés à l’auto-isolement seront attribuées aux clients des programmes de la SHTNO.

Depuis le début de la crise de la COVID-19, les services pour les personnes sans-abri ou qui ont des problèmes de dépendance sont un élément essentiel de la réponse des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

Nous annonçons aujourd’hui leur élargissement grâce à l’offre de nouvelles chambres individuelles en partenariat avec le Centre des femmes de Yellowknife et à la reprise des programmes habituels du Centre de jour et de dégrisement de Yellowknife.

Paulie Chinna, ministre responsable de la Société d’habitation des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (SHTNO), annonce que le gouvernement a modifié le Programme de supplément au loyer transitoire (PSLT) pour le rendre plus adapté et accessible aux Ténois. Ces changements revêtent une importance particulière en cette période difficile de pandémie de COVID-19, où de nombreux Ténois ont des heures de travail réduites ou ont perdu leur emploi.

Mr. Speaker, supporting the housing needs of seniors is very important to our people, to our communities and to this government.  A key approach to supporting our Elders is to recognize their desire to have friends and family close by as they age, and to remain in familiar surroundings.

Mr. Speaker, partnerships between housing stakeholders and community partners is critical in supporting the housing needs of our residents. One such partnership has been between the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation, the De Beers Group, and the Yellowknife Women’s Society. Over the last year, all three partners came together to provide 16 single-room semi-independent suites for homeless women.
