Today, the Honourable Shane Thompson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, issued the following statement on recent action taken to address two spills in Alberta:

“I acknowledge the commitments made by the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and the Honourable Sonya Savage, Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, following a series of spills at worksites in Alberta.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) released its "What We Heard Report" summarizing the results of public engagement on the proposed amendments to the Child and Family Services Act. The report includes feedback received from Indigenous governments, residents with lived experience in the Child and Family Services system, service delivery partners, and identified stakeholders.

Respondents supported some of the proposed amendments while expressing concern in other areas. Common themes included:

Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Minister Shane Thompson has announced the annual call for applications for the Non-Government Organizations (NGO) Stabilization Fund.

The NGO Stabilization Fund provides special funding to help NGOs that deliver critical GNWT-funded programs or services to the public. The funding is intended to stabilize and develop NGO capacity to manage these programs and services.

The Government of the Northwest (GNWT) is looking for resident feedback on government websites and their usability.

Residents are invited to complete a survey to provide their input. In the survey, they will be asked how they use government websites, what information they are searching for, what information is important to them, and what parts of the websites they feel work well compared to what they feel can be improved.

The next Quarterly Report on Aurora College Transformation was released by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) today.

Included in this report are updates on the first phase of the Environmental Assessment for Tin Can Hill, Community Learning Centres (CLCs) and Aurora College Organization Design. A section has been added for quick facts as well.

The GNWT invites the public to a virtual town hall meeting on May 9, 2023 for a presentation and update on the planned Wellness and Recovery Centre in Yellowknife.

The Centre, currently in the design phase, will provide shelter and community wellness spaces for NWT residents experiencing homelessness in Yellowknife.

This town hall meeting and presentation will share information on the building design, location, programs to be offered and the estimated completion date.

As of April 1, 2023, licensed family day home operators are eligible to receive the Early Childhood Program Operating Subsidy for child care spaces filled by their own children between birth to 11 years of age.

The realities of work have changed since the last time the Act was comprehensively reviewed. A thorough review of the Act is needed to ensure efficiency, understanding and compliance, as well as to ensure that the legislation is on par with the minimum standards of employment in other Canadian jurisdictions.
