Climate Youth Advisory Group established to advise on NWT climate change

The NWT Climate Change Council is reaching out to youth to inform NWT efforts on reducing emissions and adapting to the impacts of a changing climate. It has established a new Climate Youth Advisory Group to advise and collaborate with the Council. 

Youth occupy the frontlines of climate change demanding accountability from governments and industry around the world. With the Northwest Territories (NWT) warming four times faster than the rest of Canada, NWT youth have a unique voice to share. 

Education Minister launches Youth Forum on Education in the NWT

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has launched the Youth Forum on Education in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

R.J. Simpson, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, convened the forum to hear directly from students about education issues that matter to them. The group will meet virtually to brainstorm and bring forward topics and issues for the 2022-23 school year.

GNWT Implements Indigenous Employment Plans to Increase Diversity and Representation

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released Indigenous Employment Plans (IEP) outlining how all departments and agencies will increase Indigenous representation and leadership in the territory’s public service.

Guided by the Indigenous Recruitment and Retention Framework, IEPs include short, medium, and long-term goals and department-specific actions to increase, develop and maintain the number of Indigenous employees by:

Government of the Northwest Territories completes highway improvement projects

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) improved more than 218 kilometres of highway in the territory  during the 2022 season, resulting in safer, more climate change resilient road system.

In total, $47 million was invested in improvements to  the territorial highway system. Funded by the GNWT and the Government of Canada’s New Building Canada Plan, the improvement projects help communities stay connected, inject money into the local economy, and deliver the critical infrastructure the NWT needs to provide important programs and services.

Drop the Pop 2021-22 Winners Announced

Julie Green, Minister of Health and Social Services, is pleased to announce 15 winners in this years’ Drop the Pop campaign.

A total of 29 NWT schools across the Northwest Territories (NWT) participated in the annual campaign created to challenge students to find innovative ways to promote healthy beverage choices.

The winning schools will be awarded prizes ranging from $500 to $2000 in recognition of their efforts in raising awareness about the importance of healthy living and positive choices.

GNWT releases recommendations from arts funding review

 The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the Arts Program Review Report , marking the completion of the first key action item of the Northwest Territories (NWT) Arts Strategy.

The report assesses arts funding programs across the GNWT, identifies areas of strength and weakness, and provides recommendations on how to improve arts programs and services to better serve NWT residents.

NWT 811 Health Advice Line now available to all residents

A toll-free, 811 health advice line is now available in all communities across the NWT, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, Health and Social Services Minister Julie Green announced today.

Dialing 811 puts you in contact with a registered nurse who can evaluate your situation and give advice on non-urgent health issues. Anyone living in the NWT can call 811 through a landline, cell phone; or if hearing impaired, Canada Video Relay Service (VRS). This confidential, quick access service is also available in all of the territory’s official languages.
