GNWT launches new Trapper Mentorship Program

In partnership with Indigenous Governments and Indigenous Organizations, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has launched a new program to help mentor the next generation of trappers in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The Trapper Mentorship Program (TMP) provides novice trappers with an opportunity to learn from experienced trappers who act as mentors, passing on traditional life skills and knowledge.

Caroline Wawzonek, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, tabled the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) action plan in Response to the Calls for Justice on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People.

GNWT begins cargo and fuel delivery to Sachs Harbour

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has started airlifting cargo into Sachs Harbour after last month’s cancellation of the community’s scheduled marine resupply.

Buffalo Air has been contracted to fly cargo into Sachs Harbour which began on November 2. Two trips will be made per day from Paulatuk to Sachs Harbour, using Inuvik as its base of operations.

Summit Air has been contracted to fly petroleum products from Inuvik to Sachs Harbour beginning on November 4. Both contracts were awarded through two separate competitive tenders.

Indigenous and Youth Delegates Join GNWT Delegation to COP27

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is bringing northern voices to the United Nations’ 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27).

COP27 is the latest gathering of the annual global climate change summit. Leaders whose countries are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change meet to assess progress in dealing with climate change, share knowledge on GHG reduction and climate change adaptation, and negotiate protocols and agreements.

NWT carbon pricing approach changing to align with new federal requirements

Today Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Finance, announced a change to the territory’s approach to the NWT carbon tax system to align with new federal government requirements. The change includes the introduction of a bill to amend NWT carbon tax rates, as well as proposed changes to how the GNWT offsets the carbon tax’s impact on the cost of living and economic development.

GNWT releases report on potential impacts of COVID-19 on JK-12 education system

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released a report that provides insight into the ways the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected student success and the education system in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Since March 2020, there has been significant disruption to educational instruction around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
