Diamonds de Canada Approved as NWT Diamond Manufacturer

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has approved Diamonds de Canada Ltd. as an Approved NWT Diamond Manufacturer (ANDM).

The agreement ensures that Diamonds de Canada has access to NWT-mined rough diamonds, and that their manufacturing activities, which include cutting and polishing, will occur in the NWT.  The company has entered into a monitoring agreement with the GNWT as required under the GNWT’s Diamond Policy Framework.

Diamonds de Canada is a new company led by diamond industry veterans Mr. Benjamin King and Mr. Michael Indelicato.

Girls in Trades workshop now open for registration

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and Skills Canada NWT are partnering to present a Girls in Trades Workshop.

The workshop is designed to provide opportunities forfemale students to explore the trades as a potential career path with the added bonus, of boosting their confidence, teaching life skills and empowering them as young women to pursue a career path largely dominated by men.

GNWT and UNW Reach Collective Agreement

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) are pleased to announce that they have ratified a new collective agreement.

 

This new agreement is effective April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2023.

 

Negotiations for a new collective agreement began on March 9, 2021 and ended on May 31, 2021 when both sides reached a tentative agreement.

 

The previous collective agreement between the UNW and the GNWT expired on March 31, 2021.

Have Your Say: Wek’èezhı̀ı Interim Boreal Caribou Range Plan

A draft interim range plan for boreal caribou in the Wek’èezhı̀ı region has been released for public comment.

This plan -- developed as a commitment under the environmental assessment for the Tłı̨chǫ All-Season Road -- incorporates Indigenous knowledge, lived experience, and scientific data to define which habitat is most important to caribou in the area. 

The range plan aims to answer some key questions within the Wek’èezhı̀ı region:

GNWT releases NWT school reopening guidelines for 2021-22 school year

Protecting the health and safety of residents and communities is of the highest priority to the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) as we begin to prepare to reopen schools for the 2021-22 school year.

To safeguard the health and safety of students and school staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools will follow the recommendations of the NWT Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO), while supporting the learning and well-being of all NWT students.

New Waste Management Programs

The Government of the Northwest Territories has identified three priorities for new waste management programming in the NWT.

These priorities are:

  1. Used oil recycling programs
  2. Expansion of electronics recycling
  3. Used tire recycling program

Working with the Waste Resource Advisory Panel (WRAP) and the Waste Reduction and Recovery Advisory Committee (WRRAC), these priorities were identified after assessing the human and environmental health impacts of landfilling and the feasibility of diversion programming for various materials.

NWT to Rally Public in “Drive to 75 %” Vaccine Initiative

Residents in the Northwest Territories (NWT) are being encouraged to make the push to reach 75 percent uptake for full vaccination (2 doses) in the territory. Higher vaccination rates will help to ensure protection for individuals, families, and communities as fall approaches and the Delta variant of COVID-19 becomes more prevalent across the country.

The “Drive to 75%” will include additional vaccine clinic opportunities, and ongoing promotions through the month of August.

FireSmart® Starts in Your Backyard Contest to run on Ingraham Trail

The FireSmart® Starts in Your Backyard contest is back – this time focusing on the Ingraham Trail.

The contest is meant to encourage folks to practice FireSmart® principles to reduce their risk of wildfire damage.

FireSmart® principles are proven to work – taking simple, often inexpensive, steps can help protect homes and cabins from wildfires – even if it reaches the property.

All Ingraham Trail residents and cabin owners are eligible for the contest.
