Expanded Electronic and Electrical Product Recycling Pilot Launches

Some NWT communities will now be able to recycle an expanded list of electronics. Residents in Yellowknife, N’Dilo, Dettah, Hay River, Kátł’odeeche First Nation, Enterprise, Kakisa, Inuvik, Fort Smith, Fort Providence and Norman Wells will be able to bring an expanded list of electronics and electrical products to their recycling depots over the next two years. Over 500 electronics and electrical products are now able to be recycled in these communities.

 

Vaccination Requirements will now apply to all GNWT employees

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is introducing amendments to the GNWT COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, which expand application of the policy to all employees of the GNWT. As of November 30th, 2021, all GNWT employees will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Previously, the policy only applied to GNWT employees working with vulnerable populations.

 

The GNWT engaged with the Union of Northern Workers, the NWT Teachers Association, Indigenous Governments, and others in the drafting of this policy and in making amendments to it.

GNWT to Establish Temporary Yellowknife Day Shelter under the Emergency Management Act

Shane Thompson, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, announced today that he is taking action under the Emergency Management Act (EMA) to address the urgent need for a temporary day shelter in Yellowknife. The decision was made after several attempts to identify a suitable location to provide this critical service to the city’s vulnerable residents.

 

New Judge Appointed to Territorial Court

Today, Minister of Justice, R.J. Simpson announced the judicial appointment of Jeannie Scott to the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories. This appointment is effective October 8, 2021.

Ms. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University, a Masters of Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University, and a Bachelor of Laws from Ottawa University.  She was called to the bar in Ontario in 2009 and the Northwest Territories in 2010.

Dust Suppression, Site Improvements, and Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment to be Completed at Ptarmigan Mine

The Government of the Northwest Territories (NWT) and Canada are working together collaboratively to ensure activities are completed to minimize potential risk at the former Ptarmigan Mine site.

Work is being initiated following an investigation under the territorial Environmental Rights Act (ERA) that brought forward concerns about dust blowing onto the Ingraham Trail near the Ptarmigan Mine site in advance of the completion of negotiations to determine which government will be responsible for the site.

GNWT seeking proposals from local businesses for $100,000 manufacturing contribution

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking proposals from Northwest Territories’ (NWT) residents and businesses for its NWT Manufacturing Innovation and Technology Contribution.

Up to $100,000 will be awarded to the most compelling proposal for an investment in technology designed to reduce costs and improve productivity, while increasing local employment. Applicants must outline all eligible expenses in their proposal and be prepared to contribute at least 20 per cent equity into the project.
