One Year Progress Update on the Addictions Prevention and Recovery Services Work Plan

In February 2023, the Addictions Prevention and Recovery Services Work Plan was released. Since the plan’s release, 50% of the action items in the Work Plan have been completed.

The Work Plan contains 24 action items for strengthening addictions and wellness programs for residents of the Northwest Territories (NWT). The items in the plan respond to the Auditor General of Canada’s recommendations, delivered in 2022.

The recently completed action items include:

Independent Reviews of Wildfire and Emergency Response for 2023 Wildfire Season Underway

Work is underway to complete independent reviews of the 2023 wildfire season to gain a full understanding of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) wildfire and emergency response.

The ultimate goals of these reviews are to improve our effectiveness as a government and ensure we have appropriate preparedness and response strategies in place going forward.

This work has two separate components:

GNWT Launches Phase 2 of 2022 Flood After Action Review

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) invites Hay River and Kátł’odeeche First Nation (KFN) residents and businesses to provide their feedback on 2022 flood recovery activities.

The GNWT is launching Phase 2 of the After Action Review (AAR) to hear the perspectives of those who were involved with recovery activities in the 2022 flood in Hay River and on the KFN Reserve. The first phase of the AAR took place in early 2023 and focused on preparedness and response.

GNWT Fiscal Sustainability Strategy Released

As an initial step to addressing the territory’s economic challenges, Premier R.J. Simpson and Finance Minister Caroline Wawzonek have released Restoring Balance: A Fiscal Sustainability Strategy for the 20th Legislative Assembly.

The strategy outlines the reality of the territory’s financial situation and sets significant targets to help support the territory’s economic recovery through the life of the 20th Assembly. The goal of the strategy is to increase revenues and reduce expenditures in a way that minimizes impacts on critical programs and services that residents rely on.

Fuel prices updated in 10 NWT communities

Effective today, fuel prices will be updated in 10 communities serviced by the Department of Infrastructure’s Petroleum Products Program.

Prices are being updated to reflect the cost of fuel delivered through the 2023 summer and fall resupply programs. The prices of heating and motive fuel will decrease in Jean Marie River, Wrigley and Tulita, while fuel prices will increase for Beaufort Delta communities and Fort Good Hope, primarily due to increased transportation costs. Similar adjustments in fuel prices are in effect for government customers in these communities.
