I am excited to be with you today and welcome you to this gathering of interpreters and translators.

While the meeting is taking place virtually, I am joining you from my hometown of Hay River which lies on the traditional lands of Kátł’odeeche First Nation, West Point First Nation and Northwest Territory Métis Nation.

I also want to acknowledge all the Indigenous nations of the NWT – the Inuvialuit, the Dene, the Métis, and the NWT Cree.

R. J. Simpson, ministre de l’Éducation, de la Culture et de la Formation, a annoncé aujourd’hui une hausse du salaire minimum aux Territoires du Nord-Ouest (TNO).

La hausse, qui fera passer le salaire minimum de 13,46 $ l’heure à 15,20 $ l’heure, entrera en vigueur le 1er septembre 2021

La décision est fondée sur des recherches et scénarios présentés par le Comité du salaire minimum pour conseiller le ministre. Créé en 2013, ce comité est composé de membres provenant d’organisations commerciales, syndicales et communautaires de partout aux TNO.

Mr. Speaker, on September 1, 2021 the minimum wage in the Northwest Territories will increase from $13.46 per hour to $15.20 per hour, making it the second highest minimum wage in Canada behind Nunavut. Since the last increase in 2018, the cost of living and the average hourly wage in the NWT have risen. This increase ensures that the minimum wage does not fall behind, brings our minimum to average wage ratio more in line with the rest of Canada, and makes us more competitive with our neighbouring jurisdictions.

Mr. Speaker, one of the many exciting developments to expect as we get closer to launching the polytechnic university is increased capacity for Northern research. We know that the work underway, to increase the number of researchers and build effective research supports, for College partners and stakeholders across the Northwest Territories will serve as catalysts for Northern social and economic development.

Mr. Speaker, we all share in the responsibility of ensuring that our schools and communities are safe spaces. Today, we take a moment to pause and reflect on how each of us contributes to safe spaces where bullying is prevented whenever possible and quickly addressed when it occurs.

Les lauréats du Prix d’alphabétisation du Conseil de la fédération et des prix d’alphabétisation du ministre des TNO étaient à l’honneur aujourd’hui, en mode virtuel.

Le ministre de l’Éducation, de la Culture et de la Formation a créé le Prix d’alphabétisation des TNO en 2002 pour récompenser les apprenants jeunes et adultes ainsi que les éducateurs, les organismes et les entreprises exceptionnels des TNO pour leurs réalisations en alphabétisation.

Le ministre de l’Éducation, de la Culture et de la Formation R. J. Simpson a fait la déclaration suivante à l’occasion de la publication du premier rapport trimestriel sur la transformation du Collège Aurora :

« Lorsque le GTNO s’est engagé à transformer le Collège Aurora en une université polytechnique, nous avons promis que le processus serait transparent.

Mr. Speaker, when this Government committed to establishing a polytechnic university we did so with the promise that we would be transparent in the process.

Guided by the NWT Post-Secondary Education Framework, there were a number of key documents released last fall that explain the process of transformation and those documents, the Implementation Plan and Areas of Specialization for the polytechnic university, continue to guide the process. But transparency does not stop there.

La date limite pour les bourses du Conseil des arts des TNO a été prolongée au 15 avril 2021. Les artistes ou les organismes ténois qui souhaitent réaliser une œuvre, un projet ou un évènement artistique particulier entre avril 2021 et mars 2022 peuvent obtenir une subvention.

Dans ce contexte de pandémie, cette prolongation donnera aux artistes et aux organismes le temps d’ajuster leurs plans du reste de l’année à laquelle les subventions s’appliquent.
